Do Make Say Think will be appearing at Cafe du Nord on 10/13 and 10/14 at the Bottom of the Hill.
Yuko When and where did you all meet and how was 'Do Make Say Think' formed?
DMST We've all been friends for a long time. Half and half since high school. My half from
Ajax, Ontario with Jimmy the other, Ohad, Chuck, Dave from here in Toronto. We formed
like every other band in the world forms, because of pot.
Yuko Are you all from Toronto, ON?
DMST Yes.
Yuko Please describe your creative process in making a song. Is it
heavily improvisational? Or do people bring in their own ideas?
DMST Mostly jamming. But we don't smoke pot as much anymore and besides, 'jammin'
can be as boring as shit sometimes. You can only really play with a delay pedal
for so long. So mostly right now we're taking a more mapped out
compositional approach.
Yuko Given the nature of your music, is it difficult to compose a song?
how long does it normally take for you to complete composing a song?
DMST I'll give you a two part answer:
1. In a word no. But patience is truly the greatest instrument any one of us
can play.
2. Years. The songs are always evolving.
YukoWhat kind of music, bands and musicians have influenced your style of music?
DMST this is no Goddamn joke and some people think we're being ironic but the
truth is, Punk and Metal. We were all old school metallica/slayer/napalm
death fans. A little Ramones here a little D.R.I there. loud and fast is the
best. Then the weed kicked in and so did Spiritualized and Gaster Del Sol. It
just kinda took off from there.
Yuko After the release of your second album, "Good-bye Enemy Airship", you
toured mainly in Eastern Canada and Europe. Was there a reason why
you did not go on an extensive tour in the U.S.?
DMST We did and it was a long one. I think five weeks. East coast, West coast.
Three days off. With fly pan am. We destroyed a Winnepeg hotel room the night of our last
show. We're gonna see some old friends this time around.
YukoYour upcoming tour covers eastern canada and many U.S. cities. Any
plan to go any other countries soon? If so, where?
DMST We did greese this year but we want to go to Japan. Anybody in San Sran
think they got enough money to send us there? That'd be awesome.
Yuko Is there any meaning, message or story behind your band's name? (4
verbs: Do Make Say Think...and any particular reason why you put these
words in this order?)
DMST Well....You're a jounalist so you probibly
learned this in school, No? These are the essential verbs and we're geeks
for naming our band after them. We should of really named our band somethin
cool like um....'ROCK LIPS'!!! Yeah, that's a good one.
Yuko Is this your first time playing live in San Francisco? I notice that
you are playing at two venues. The bottom of the hill and Cafe Du
Nord. San francisco is the only city that you are playing for two nights in a row. Any reason why? (have you
noticed that a lot of people here have been waiting to hear you
live??)
DMST We played bottom of the hill the last time we were here. When we were there a door
was broken. We're not sure how that happened but it was on our watch
so, we felt shitty but they've invited us back. I've never been to Du
Nord but i'm sure they have lots of shit for us to break there.
Yuko Your last album, 'Winter Hymn, Country Hymn, Secret Hymn' was released
late last year. It has been almost a year since then. Any plan to
release another album some time in the near future?
DMST Sure, that's our job. We put out records. I just hope people like 'em.
Yuko Any message to your fan in San Francisco?
DMST We only have one fan? Wow, these two shows better be good. Um, you cats
still having gay marriage there? It's kinda died out down here, in fact there's
a lot of gay divorces happening. One day your goverment will learn the
important message that it's not such a big deal and that gays and lesbians
have the same right to be as miserable as the heteros.
Yuko Sorry I omitted that "s" after "fan". You guys have lots of fans in san Francisco! CanŐt wait to see you guys at the show!!
